Valentine’s Day is almost here and while many people see the holiday as a time to express and celebrate romantic love, it can be so much more than that! For me, the holiday is about all kinds of love: love for our parents, our children, siblings, close friends, and pets.

I love you and I’m trying to explain in ways those three words can’t. I’m trying to say that you mean the most to me. I’m trying to let you know that I adore you and that I cherish all the moments we’ve spent together. I’m trying to explain that I still want and need you. I am trying to let you know that I’ve always meant it whenever I say ‘I love you’.

The word “love” can also be used to describe how we can become deeply committed and connected to something. For example, in my debut novel, What Happened to Helen, the two main characters share a deep love for art and I’m willing to bet that you and I share a great love for reading. Valentine’s Day is truly a holiday for everyone when we consider the many types of love that can brighten and enhance our lives.
